Summary/Abstract: In September 1933, just barely more than fifty years ago, Wilhelm Reich completed his The Mass Psychology o f Fascism, a work that inaugurated a new phase in the history of Marxist thought. Reich's claim, that Marxism, standing alone, does not suffice to explain the history of our century and must be made more adequate by supplementing it with the insights Freud and psychoanalysis, was taken up by the members the Frankfurt school, notably Adorno and Marcuse, and, more recently, Habermas. In the United States this point of view has many adherents. Richard Lic11tman's book is a major contribution to this strand in Marxist thought.
