About a class of French psychological verbal idioms : ça me casse les pieds ; ça me tape sur le système

Summary/Abstract: This work is dedicated to the description and analysis of French expressions such ça me casse les pieds (to get on somebody’s nerves), ça me sort par les yeux (I’ve had more than I can take of). These structures are original in that they are formed by a predicate; the complement of which is a part of the body. The set {V + Npart of the body} can’t be analysed as a complex predicate, as briser la glace (literally to break the ice). The particularity of this argument is that we interpret it as necessarily bound with the clitic pronoun complement, whose referent owns this part of the body. If we bring together these and the ones related to the syntax of “inaliénables” and if we solve the bounding problems, we can eventually venture the hypothesis according to witch these sentences belong to the group of so-called psychological verbs.
