The Logic of Formation of Electoral Coalitions in Parliamentary Democracies

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the process of formation of electoral coalitions in parliamentary systems. Despite the fact that these coalitions have a significant impact on the political process in states with parliamentary forms of government, little attention has been given to them in modern political science. Our analysis has shown that by entering electoral coalitions, parties increase their chances to participate in the exercise of state power. Moreover, the probability increases for them to become a part of the governing coalition and to get ministerial positions. The creation of electoral coalitions depends on the degree of disproportionality of an electoral system. The stimuli to the formation of electoral coalitions are stronger in states with majoritarian voting system.
