Summary/Abstract: Italian legislation regarding immigration contains various forms of institutional discrimination on the level of real recognition of the social and the political rights of migrants. This research work focuses on a specific case of the south of Italy, and aims to show how immigrants themselves can become protagonists in the process social integration. In particular, the research uncovers instances of coming together between groups of migrants, representatives of local municipalities, and subjects of civic society. This “bottom-up” approach allows us to see a dynamic interaction with the host society, which can lead to a better understanding of new the active dynamics at work in migrants’ struggle for social and political participation.
