Polish-German textbook: Between history and politics

Summary/Abstract: Findings of a 2008 survey reveal major support on the part of young people for a friendly development of Polish-German relations, and a strong conviction that the two countries’ interpretations of mutual history can be brought closer together. In this context, the proposal to write a joint Polish-German history textbook should be welcomed as an opportunity to deepen mutual relations, at least in some areas. The joint textbook initiative was put forward in late 2007 by the two countries’ foreign ministers, Radek Sikorski and Walter Steinmeyer. But one condition has to be met for the project to succeed: while politicians should create a good atmosphere, they must not seek to appraise — still less interfere in — the textbook. Trust in participants in the project, overseen by the joint Textbook Commission, is indispensable for its success.
