Romanian-British exchanges at the Lower Danube in the Framework of Romania’s Foreign Trade (1901-1914)

Summary/Abstract: Based on statistical sources published by the Romanian authorities and by the European Commission of the Danube, the paper focuses upon presenting the evolution of the Romanian-British Foreign Trade and navigation in the first years of the twentieth century. Assessing the quantum of mutual exchanges both from a diachronic, historical perspective, and from a comparative, synchronic presentation (with details regarding the total amount of Romania’s exportations and importations), the author aims at underlying the conditions which influenced the continuous reduction of British interest for the Lower Danube region, where the importance of the ports Brăila and Galatz slowly, but irreversibly, diminished.
