Transfer of Greek and Islamic - Arab science in the West through Al-Andalus

Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the scientific links between the Islamic east and the European west in the mediaeval period. These links, which were particularly intensive and productive in the 10th and 11th centuries, made it possible for a range of classical works from the culture of ancient Greece, which had been translated into Arabic on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, to reach the European west. We have first-hand evidence of this in two important Arab-Spanish biographhical works, Tarih-ul-‘attiba’ by Ibn Gulgul (Cordoba, 332/944. – 384/994.), and Tabaqat-ul-umam by Ibn Said al-Andalusi (Almeria, 420/1029. – Toleddo, 462-1070). Further research into early biographical literature in Arabic would strengthen belief in east-west scientific dialogue in the mediaeval period, which to some extent at least made possible the later emergence of the Renaissance.
