Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on changes in the role of universities within the system of tertiary education in the Czech Lands in the 1950s. During this period, universities lost their hitherto exclusive position in the area of basic research. Education of select experts, which until that time was the task of universities, was transferred to specialised academies. Universities were supposed to become elite institutions of tertiary education that would educate mainly scientists and other narrowly specialised experts. In Czechoslovakia, this conception proved to be unviable.
