Summary/Abstract: Since the early 1970s, one of the changes in marriage-related behaviour in all European countries has been an increase in extramarital births. However, there have been considerable differences among different regions and countries. There have also been differences at the lower territorial levels, which is also the case in Serbia. We give particular attention to south-eastern Serbia and its border municipalities. In this paper, we consider extramarital births primarily in terms of the mother's ethnicity, which has in many cases been a strong predictor of the large differences in the share of extramarital births, and which is especially significant in the case of the Roma women. One in twenty people in south-eastern Serbia is Roma, but Roma extramarital births constitute one third of all extramarital births in this region. This paper includes some of the main findings of the recent qualitative research on extramarital births by the Roma women.
