Summary/Abstract: The paper describes the sweet dishes and beverages in the contemporary cuisine of the Turks (Sunni and Alevi) in Northeastern Bulgaria. It traces their presence in everyday and ritual meals giving the ingredients and the ways they are prepared as well. Special attention has been paid to the participation of sweet dishes and beverages in the traditional family and calendar rituals and to their functions in the folklore culture from the region. Folklore stories about the sacral origin of particular dishes connected with the commemorating rites, which mark the differences between the two confessions, are presented. The paper emphasizes on the order in which the food is served to the ritual table, on the placement of the sweet dishes and beverages. It also stresses on the functional meaning of baklava and halva in the opposition wedding-death.
