Leaving the Giants

Summary/Abstract: Two giants of philosophy, academician Mihailo Marković and professor Svetozar Stojanović, abandoned us in this year, leaving behind them irreplaceable void not only in our philosophy but also in the world thought. Both of them created markedly critical and undogmatic thought profile on the very beginning of their phil- osophical path and professional career. They, together with other colleagues from the Praxis group, contributed to the renaissance of critical and undogmatic com- prehension of Marx, making of the New Left and broad social commitment in the public sphere not only in Yugoslavia and Serbia but also in the whole world where they acquired high reputation of the finest experts for Marxism and social and politi- cal conditions in Yugoslavia and former eastern communist countries. They trod not only the road of traditional contemplative philosophy but they also assumed the re- sponsible role in many significant social events (participation in student movement in 1968, activity in Praxis group, constant and frequent lectures on many renowned universities throughout the world). Both of them were ready to pay high price of losing their working posts at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade not just to pre- serve their philosophical identity but also their moral, political and human integrity. Although they parted company in the tragic events of civil war in former Yugoslavia in the political and ideological terms, both of them remained the paragons of digni- fied and upright human gait in the circumstances in which it was very hard and risky.
