Summary/Abstract: Sometime in the mid-thirties, when Miklós Szentkuthy’s first book" Prae" (1934) was the literary sensation in Budapest, a widely respected literary critic called Szentkuthy a “monster”. He immediately added that, given how much of Hungarian literature at the time was smooth, normal and prudent, the arrival of a monster was welcome. By the time I got to know him personally in the early fifties, Szentkuthy had already become something of a sacred monster. In the dungeonlike tedium of the Stalinist regime, he had become the object of a small literary cult.
