Summary/Abstract: The present arcticle is an attempt to determine the characteristics of the folklore of both of the german ethnic groups. Moreover, on the basis of current studies on folk song research, commonalities and differences in language, melody, harmony and rhythm shall be pointed out. In the process, methods of music history, ethnography, music theory and compared musicology are applied. „Schlesische Volkslieder mit Melodien" by Hoffmann von Fallersleben und Ernst Richter (1842) on the one hand and the State Historical Archive of the Volga Germans in Engels (Oblast Saratov) on the other, provide the basis for the source material. The observation of keys does play a decesive role and demonstrates specific differences. In addition, current questions and problems of ethnomusicology are formulated and discussed using the example of the two regions, the Volga area and Silesia.
