NEW ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERIES AT POROLISSUM ABOUT SOME ROMAN BUILDINGS OUTSIDE THE TOWN AND THE ISSUE OF THE ROMAN ROAD’S RANGE WHERE ENTERING

Summary/Abstract: Few years ago we took notice of several Roman ceramic materials nearby the town Porolissum located at small distances one from the other (fig. 1-2). In the text we designated the spots where the materials were found as area A, area B, area C and area D. The areas are placed on a plateau – gently descending on the left side where it is bordered upon the middle of the plateau – 100 meters North from the customs building – there is a hummock that divides the plateau in two. Following we’ll describe the four distinct areas: Area A. This area is located on the opposite side beyond the road that leads today to the town of Porolissum. In the past years there were seen ceramic fragments in the freshly plough land. The land is no longer cultivated. We did not collected artifacts from this area. Area B. Towards the center of this area of yellow-reddish clayey soil it appears a rectangular black spot of approximately 32,50 square meters, with sides of 65 m x 50 m. By archaeological surface researches we collected on the spot ceramic fragments, spikes, a crampiron, small fragments of glass pots, 50 coins, a bronze pendant shaped as stag horns and many pieces of adobe, of bricks, tiles and shingles (fig. 3-10). It is likely to have existed here some stone or even dirt and wood constructions. Area C. On the right side of the road, at the bottom of „Ferice” Hill in a young hazelnut forest, there can be observed even today traces of stone walls – remains of possible Roman constructions. Area D. This area actually consists of a 100 meters portion from the wagon road that is in the proximity of area A. The road also leads to Porolissum and it is called „under Ferice”. Years ago various ceramic materials were seen on this spot; we found here a bronze coin and five black glass beads. Nowadays the road has been redone (fig. 11). We presume that possibly these constructions were placed nearby the Roman road that entered the town of Porolissum. By now the road was belived to have entered the town from the right side of the plateau, by the Ciucioaia’s Hill. But no artifacts have been noted there despite that some plots are still cultivated.
