Summary/Abstract: The changes that took place in the late 80s and 90s of the twentieth century in eastern block countries remaining under the communist regime had multifaceted consequences. One of them was the ability to adapt church organization to the requirements which the ministry faced under the new conditions. Thus, in 1992, the third in the last century circumscription of the Catholic Church was made in Poland. As a result, 13 metropolises, 25 Roman Catholic dioceses, one Greek Catholic diocese and the Archdiocese of Lodz directly dependent on the Holy See were functioning on Polish lands. The Pope appointed 9 new metropolitans, 16 new diocesan bishops, 3 new auxiliary bishops, while 14 others were transferred and assigned to the new bishoprics. After completing these changes, in 2004 the Church in Poland presently numbers 44 dioceses, 14 of which have the status of metropolitan archdiocese of the Roman Rite, 27 dioceses of this rite, the Military Ordinariate of the Polish Army and the Greek Catholic Archdiocese and Diocese.
