The phenomenon known as Srecko M. Džaja

Summary/Abstract: In this paper the authors seeks to bring together and sum up the major points of the polemic “Usurpation of the Bogomils – the future in the rear-view mirror,” with particular emphasis on certain irregularities and inaccuracies in the approach to date of certain elementary terms concerning the history of the Ottoman period in Bosnia. The focus of interest is on a key term for non-Musslims in the Ottoman census records (gabr), the use of this term in translations into Bosnian, and a scholarly analysis of the consequences of the improper use of this term along with numerous misuses in historical and general literature. The paper takes an in-depth approach to the etymology of the concept and its possible meanings. In addition, issues of importance for this polemic are reviewed, with certain remarks and commentary by the author of the paper.
