The issue of the relationship between the sender and the recipient in nineteenth-century sermon

Summary/Abstract: The subject matter of this article encompasses the issue of the relationship between sender and recipient in nineteenth-century Polish sermons. The author adopts Bachtin theory of genre in hers considerations of genre. The research concentrates on pragmatic level of pattern of genre and its two important components: sender and the receiver. The paper presents communicative roles which were used by sender’s in sermons. In order to reconstruct roles of a priest linguistic features of his utterance are analyzed. The roles are made as: priest (kapłan), messenger, shepherd, teacher and prosecutor. In order to show the species of relationship between participants of sermon she pays attention to the context: authoritarian type of nineteenth-century communication and specification of communication in Church (God, cleric, the faithful). In the article is told, that social and historical context and some determinants of the communication situation played an important role in shaping the sender’s roles of sermon.
