Summary/Abstract: This paper briefly features some of the current problems encountered when translating literary works from Japanese into Romanian. The translator stands as a mediator between the original work and the readers in the target language, and is required to be as “faithful” as possible to both. Faithfulness in translation includes several components, as discussed in the first part of the paper. Due to the great dissimilarities between the two languages and cultures involved, in order to achieve faithfulness, the translator must find equivalents, clarify concepts to compensate for the inevitable cultural asymmetries and, at times, bring innovations. Moreover, while endeavoring to accurately convey the meanings of the original work, the translator must also seek to preserve the naturalness of the target language in the translation.
