Summary/Abstract: Joseph (Józef) Bau (1920-2002) was a graphic designer born in Kraków, who survived the Holocaust thanks to Schindler’s List. For a while he was hiding in a village near Kraków, later he survived the ghetto and concentration camp in Kraków. His secret marriage in the concentration camp became an inspiration for a scene from Spielberg’s film. Bau was repeatedly rescued by his artistic talent. He even received orders from the occupier. He drew maps and charts for the Germans, but he also forged documents that allowed escapees from the camps to survive on the outside. After the war, after completing his artistic studies in Kraków, he emigrated with his wife to Israel, where he became a famous graphic designer and one of the pioneers of Israeli animation. After his death his family discovered that he also worked for the Mossad, producing false documents for secret agents.
