Summary/Abstract: In July 2006, as a journalist for Radio MARŠ I attended a protest aimed at closing down the Alien Deportation Center in Postojna and was witness to a brutal police crackdown on protesters. One policemen pushed me against a wall, obviously overstepping his powers, as the Senate of the Slovenian Interior Ministry’s Complaints Department confirmed some months later. [...] As a citizen of Slovenia, I am indeed alert to the Slovenes’ attitude towards the Roma, but I also think that much more attention should be devoted to the Roma’s own attitude towards the environment in which they live. Only when this is achieved will governments (and not only the Slovenian government) be able to talk sincerely about Roma integration. At the moment, all I can see are assimilation tendencies [...]
