Summary/Abstract: Under the Sign of Ambivalence: the Night in Jean Giraudoux’s Theatre. Present as a temporal data or framework for action, in the theatre of Jean Giraudoux, the night has not yet made the object of a particular study. Some of its aspects have been addressed in various symposia on myths, female characters or in articles about such and such work. Yet by its ambivalence it the night is at the heart of Giraudoux’s dramaturgy and poetics. The night concerns an oscillation between dramatic genres and registers within the same piece. Double are also the symbolic values attached to the night in this theatre who hesitates between aesthetic choices a priori irreconcilable. Thus the night becomes a great space of theatricality.
