Summary/Abstract: The subject of the legal regulation and protection of the cultural-historic heritage in the Ottoman Empire during the second part of XIX c., although an extremely interesting theme, has not yet been a subject of research in our or in the foreign historic-juristic science. The initial touches suggest that this subject is still .terra incognita. and presents great possibilities for future researchers. In fact the legal regulations, created and applied at that time, dealt with the problem of cultural monuments as objects of legal protection for the first time in our lands. Notwithstanding some obvious imperfections of these acts (from contemporary point of view), they play enormous role for the protection of the cultural-historic heritage in the empire. Having in mind that beside us, the Bulgarians, our neighbors were also a part of the empire for many centuries, this means, that due to these legal interventions, a great part of our common cultural-historical wealth was preserved, to the well founded pride of the whole region. With these legal texts, concerning the preservation of the cultural monuments from the past, the Ottoman Empire was the first Muslim state in the world, that found place in its legislation for purely cultural, mundane problems.
