Summary/Abstract: Regarding the Western Balkans, the chief question today is how to integrate the region into the institutional, political, economic, and cultural mainstream of Europe. Simply by accepting European integration as a strategy for development, Western Balkan countries are bringing about changes to social structures that have had positive effects. But the border between success and failure remains the least guarded in the region; and the question of the Western Balkans remains an issue of significance to the international community. For, while Croatia will become the EU’s 28th member state in July 2013, many of its neighbors in the region have grown disenchanted by enlargement fatigue and by harsh criticism of the accessions of Bulgaria and Romania in 2007.
