Summary/Abstract: After its outbreak in 1926 it took only a few years for structuralism to become the leading method in linguistic and literary studies. Its main characteristic was that it offered a systematic and coherent system within then loose and incoherent field of study. The two schools at the time were labelled French and Prague. However, differently from the French school, Prague structuralism is still very much alive as a discipline. Presently, it is the third generation of structuralises attempting to adapt structuralism to contemporary literary theories. Its main concern is the aesthetic function of literature which is being discussed from the perspective of philosophy of literature as well as the affirmation of structuralist »close reading«. The later has become an issue after 1990 when the Prague linguistic circle was re-established.
