Summary/Abstract: The body has become a pivotal theoretical and empirical puzzle for the social sciences, one that has been approached with renewed vigour in the last twenty years. Attempts to solve this puzzle have been inter/ disciplinary efforts, each taking a different tack on working trough some coherent solutions to the problems posed in embodiment theory. The body is a contested and problematic feature of modern societies, giving rise to the view that we live in a somatic society. The body and experience of embodiment have not always been prominent in sociology. However, since the early 1990s, there has been dramatic growth of interest in bodily matters, within sociology. On the heels of significant social, cultural, political, and technological change, the body and experience of embodiment appear substantially more visible than ever before-conditions that have stimulated sociological interests in a manner that is decidedly more direct, focused, and sustained compared to previous and legacy of sociology. This paper gives an overview on theoretical approaches that one can identified in sociology of the body, and how these approaches try to overcome mind/body dualism which has been characteristic of Western philosophy since the time of Rene Descartes.
