Summary/Abstract: The author of this text treats the differences between the market and capitalism referring to the works of Karl Polanyi and Fernand Braudel. The other subject of this article is the systematic tension between capitalism and democracy. The author’s explorations are historical articulating the broad historical features and materials concerning the genesis of capitalism, but his main ambition is to highlight the complex relationship between capitalism and democracy in Central and Easter Europe, or in the postsocialist world. In fact, he explains how the transition to the market stabilizes this tension in postsocialist countries. The most important goal of the author is to explicate the curent socio-economic tendencies in these countries, and in line with this his article is proved to be a critical sociological consideration of the results of transition. The transition in postsocialist world thus means that the existing forms of capitalism are pushing out the market.
