Summary/Abstract: In the treatise, Critical Vampirism, the author describes the irony-conceptions of the American New Criticism (modern) and the American deconstruction (postmodern) using mainly Cleanth Brooks’s and Paul de Man’s ironological writings. In her reading the ’new critical’ irony is more positive and structural (cf. constructive) — it could be regarded as the modern ironical version of the Kierkegaardian irony as well — while, opposed to it, the de Manian irony-concept is the postmodern and deconstructive revival of the Schlegelian irony. Analysing the Brooksian and de Manian texts she pays special attention to the consistent neglect and/or misunderstanding of the Kierkegaardian irony which can be connected with the aestheticism of criticism.
