Summary/Abstract: “Microsurgery” refers to a set of surgical techniques and methods which are carried out beyond the visual perception of the unaided normal human eye [1,2]. Microsurgical interventions require additional optical magnification by using operating loupes or surgical microscope. In modern surgery, microsurgical approach is applied in a wide range of interventions including nerve and blood vessels repair, free tissue transfers (transfer of free microvascular flaps), replantations and revascularizations of limbs and digits, allotransplantation of tissues and organs etc. Microsurgery has improved the understanding of the physiology and pathology of small vessels and nerves. Further insights into the surgical anatomy and the blood supply to the skin, fascia, muscles and bones are continually revealed. In addition, the skills acquired during the dissection of a free flap have enhanced the respect for the tissues and have also enriched the ingenuity in other aspects of plastic surgery.
