Summary/Abstract: The paper contains a survey of basic semantic problems one should be able to solve using monolingual dictionaries, scientific as well as popular. I presume that a scientific dictionary presents descriptions of the linguistic facts which are at least temporarily confirmed. The facts are described with the aid of semantic meta-language assumed for a given dictionary. It is not necessary to fulfill the conditions mentioned above in popular dictionaries. First of all, I assume that lexical units, but not entry-words, ought to be described in both types of dictionaries. Afterwards, from the theoretical lexicography point of view, three fundamental semantic problems are considered, namely the rules describing the so-called proper polysemy, rules defining lexical units and types of their definitions applied in dictionaries and finally rules determining semantic interrelations between lexical units. At the end of the paper I postulate to correct the semantic definitions in the best popular dictionary of modern Polish, namely Inny słownik języka polskiego. In my opinion, it would be a good idea to create scientific dictionaries of the chosen semantic classes of lexical units which have already been described in numerous monographs.
