LITERATURE TYPE OF PERIPHERAL CULTURE: FRONTIER NOVEL

Summary/Abstract: The most concrete meaning of the ‘frontier’ is the political one: an administrative line between countries. On the other hand, the frontier implies a fictive boundary separating different identities; a historical creation and spiritual formation. In our interpretation, the conceptual set of the meanings of the word frontier participates as a factor that sets the constellation of a novel type (‘frontier novel’). In this context, Erzsébet Juhász’s work ‘Frontier novel’ (Határregény) has been interpreted as a kind of literary presentation of spatial partitioning, as a version of historical „frontier novel”. Monarchy constitutes the broadest space of the complex novel structure: the places are identified and create the meanings related to Hungary in the period of the Monarchy. It is all about the toponyms of the periphery, separating, disunion (measuring from Szegedin, being the point of departure and arrival), Szabadka, Bratislava, Temiszvar and Linz. The starting point of narration is Novi Sad. This study, therefore, presents a kind of ‘frontier novel’, a particular form (‘peripheral culture’”) of Vojvodina-Hungarian literature placing it into typological conceptual set of reflections of the recent period of the history of literature
