Hotels and sustainable development of the region-fiction, possibility or necessity

Summary/Abstract: Hotels belong to the key elements of the tourism infrastructure in a region. On the other hand, a tourist region is an important determinant of their attractiveness. That is why hotel managers should be interested in the destination development. However, they should be interested in sustainable development, connected with both social and environmental goals. Experience shows that sustainable development faces many obstacles, and in the case of hotels many ecologically friendly solutions are not introduced. They would be more often implemented if they were connected with the customers’ expectations, if their introduction raised a hotels’ opinion among tourists. The consequence of this assumption was a study that showed that in the examined group there was relatively low expectation of ecological activities done by hotels.
