Summary/Abstract: The article presents the account of the interrelation of philosophy and science in positivism. Scientism was the reason for which philosophy’s claim to be reliable knowledge was rejected, and its role of philosophy reduced to that of 'ancilla scientiae'. Positivism strengthened the thesis that the empirical method is a privileged one, and that no other way of carrying out research meets scientific criteria.
