Summary/Abstract: The goal is to develop notions of „nation“ and „nationalism“, both questioned from Western Europe, among other reasons, due to the „last Balkan conflict“. This text is a prescriptive proposal of analysis of this terminology, through the lens of several Spanish and international authors who analyzed this notions and the Yugoslav conflict. For elaboration, the author considers capital to rebuild the units of analysis and make them closer to European historiography, beyond the binary division ethnic nationalism-civic nationalism with the aim of eliminate the substrate of subjective identification. The author assumes the validity and effectiveness of these categories applied to the Western Balkans, as „ethnic“, but argues that its indiscriminate association from West Europe with the conflict has prevented a more accurate approach. In the text are holding among other explanation the coincidence of the conflict with the emergence of the EU project as one of the main.
