Summary/Abstract: Symbols are often used in visual communication. The symbol traditionally is defined as a sign based on the convention or habit of its usage. In this paper, a different type of symbol is described. The symbol is defined as a tangential sign. It signifies “not the object”. Such a symbol is based on the idea of the tangential intentionality introduced in the recently published book “Sign and Form”. Such a conception of the sign facilitates accounting for some special cases of symbols.
