Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the documents issued by Kaunas city municipality in 1918-1940. Mandatory orders regulated different spheres of the life of local residents, such as territory planning, housing development, fire security, city sanitation, citizen hygiene, and service arrangement, among others. Mandatory orders and acts of Kaunas municipality can be considered a comprehensive source for the research of everyday life and material culture of the citizens. These regulations help to visualize the rhythm of the city: municipality issued orders which regulated the time for rest, trade, traffic, and street cleaning. Moreover, Kaunas city space was clearly divided by determining what was prohibited or obligatory to do in certain areas. For example, in the regulations for housing development and service arrangement, specific streets and areas are identified. The documents issued by Kaunas city municipality aimed at modernizing the city – the provisional capital of Lithuania. The orders dealt with the security of the dwellers, city arrangement, and protection against the contagions. Some documents show the attempts to improve rather low standards of hygiene of the local residents. The mandatory orders and acts had a considerable effect on the development of the city. In comparison to the first post-war orders, the regulation became considerably more detailed.
