Summary/Abstract: The sociological approach to social imagination is concerned with both a theoretical revival and with specific applications (political mythology, everyday rumour, the image of the other, etc.). It is lodged in the traditions of the humanities, especially in the works of the founders of this approach, who accorded special attention to collective representations, rites, and symbolic systems. The authors of the article show how the problem of the imagination is situated at the point where the issues of the social converge and that it enables a unique perception of micro-social aspects and serious trends in human history. An examination is therefore made of the methodological and epistemological aspects that render the imaginary a constructible object for sociology.
