Summary/Abstract: Restorative Justice found a complementary fit with the successful move to a democracy experienced in South Africa from 1995. The focus on protecting the rights of children specifically gave rise to a transformation in the juvenile justice system. The authors reflect on the approaches to restorative justice and the use of concepts such as Ubuntu, the social conflict window, the spheres of convergence in crime prevention, the compass of shame and reintegrative shaming vs. stereotyping and the influence of the Child Justice Act. They then explore findings from studies done on restorative justice in South Africa and end their discussion with proposing points for further reflection.
