Summary/Abstract: Vonnegut's second novel, The Sirens of Titan, has been seen as the author's most extravagant science-fiction book, a good illustration of what is usually dismissively called a space opera. It is the aim of "The Last Frontier in Vonnegut's 1959 Space Opera" to describe the ways in which Vonnegut plays with, parodies and subverts the conventions of mainstream science-fiction, as well as providing significant and relevant details of the special context in which the novel was published, a context which sheds light on its thematic framework and range of possible interpretations.
