Summary/Abstract: The paper makes a theoretical analysis of the main opinions of nationalism in the light of certain aspects of the conceptual development of Europe in the modern era. On this basis the main characteristics of the Greek, Serbian and Bulgarian nationalism are discussed. Greek nationalism is the oldest and directly influenced by the French Revolution and the ideas of Rigas Fereos. Serbian nationalism is relatively young, but in the nineteenth century goes the same way: from romantic / liberal to an integral, resting on the Načertanije and a powerful foreign policy of patronage. Bulgarian nationalism is formed later and its development is entirely in the spirit of liberal nationalism, which, unlike neighboring nationalisms does not reach complete integral dimension due to failures in the wars for national unification. Finally, it is concluded that if we accept nationalism as attitude to the world and the problems of the nation, which prescribes and requires clear and explicit policy action, i.e. as an ideology, then it seems not as an ideology but as the most powerful ideology of the world.
