Summary/Abstract: To what extent the European Union’s political system is democratic has been receiving increased attention in academic research in recent decades, but the main question facing scholars is concerned with how to analyse democracy at the EU level. This article seeks to analyse the extent to which the European Union’s political system is democratic from the perspective of representative democracy, that is, this analysis of democracy in the European Union is grounded on the basic principles of representative democracy; representative institutions, elections, political parties and political accountability.
