Summary/Abstract: The text represents the presidential address held at the 2009 congress of the Croatian Sociological Association. It is argued that sociology as a discipline and its research results are insufficiently visible in the transitional Croatian society, because of its previous role of legitimation of the social order, assigned to it during the socialist period. It is in such past of the discipline that the reasons should be sought for its insufficient theoretical and methodological capability to respond to the complex processes Croatian society is faced with in the post-socialist period. In order to fulfil its public role, Croatian sociology should continue its current efforts to methodologically diversify and to adopt multiparadigmatic theoretical approaches. It should also work on its self-reflexivity as a discipline and strive to achieve ever-higher levels of academic excellence.
