Summary/Abstract: The world’s predominant academic language is English, and unquestionably, Estonian scientifi c activities are continually moving towards the increasing use of English. It is important that university students and staff have the opportunity to publish their research in good quality Estonian. The article deals with measures taken at Tallinn University (TLU) to promote research and academic writing in Estonian.The paper is comprised of four chapters. Firstly, the state of English in scientifi c world is outlined. Also, documents that try to retain a prominent place for Estonian in university curricula are described. Given that, the methodology of the fi rst stage of monitoring is explained. Then the results are discussed. The paper examines the attitudes of university academic worker’s towards academic Estonian and how great the need of training concerning the use of the academic Estonian language is. The main research questions are: Where does TLU staff publish their research results? Are there possibilities to publish in the Estonian language? What kinds of problems and needs related to the preparation of lecture/study materials in Estonian do professors have?
