Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the historiographical controversies related to the Synod of Iaşi in the fall of 1642. It is known that the organization of the synod was triggered by the political-religious context of the Eastern European space, where Orthodoxy was facing Catholic and Calvinist propaganda. Under the pressure of competing confessions, the Greek, Ukrainian and Moldavian churches sent their representatives to one of the most important theological meetings organized until then. In historiography, the synod is estimated to have met the objectives initially set: the approval of the Confession of Faith of Peter Movilă (Petru Movilă), the Kiev Metropolitan, and the resolution of two issues that had stirred debates during the Synod of Kiev of 8-18 September 1640. The two points in discussion regarded the existence of the Purgatory and the liturgical moment of the Holy Spirit’s descent upon the bread and wine symbolizing the body and blood of Christ. The text, discussed in Iaşi, was approved at the Synod of Constantinople, by the decision of March 11, 1643, signed by the Ecumenical Patriarch Parthenios I and the other patriarchs of the East: Joannic of Alexandria, Macarius of Antioch and Paisios of Jerusalem. The work of Peter Movilă was called The Orthodox Confession of the Eastern (Catholic and Apostolic) Church.
