Summary/Abstract: This study does not focus on the analysis of doctors in princely courts, since such a topic would require a much wider research and synthesis effort. Starting from the limited information stored in the documentary sources, the author tries to bring light into issues related to the position doctors held in the urban communities of Moldavia and Wallachia for the time interval under analysis. Nevertheless, a terminological clarification regarding the meanings of the word doctor proves to be necessary: if nowadays the word designates a person who completed higher education studies and is responsible for the prevention and treatment of diseases, in the Middle Age, especially in the area of Romania, the ad litteram application of this definition is not possible. The author reckons that one cannot move from the barbers, those craftsmen who, besides shaving and hair cutting, were also taking care of wounds, to doctors, people that undergo a certain training, let alone to surgeons: an intermediate category, closer to the barbers, perhaps, but who could demonstrate their training with the help of certificates obtained abroad, after completing some studies or just un apprenticeship. The author does not insist on their situation, since these cases are relatively rare in the Romanian principalities, in princely courts or in the new hospitals. From the studied sources, the author did not manage to find out information about the existence of such a local surgeon for the time interval considered.
