Jewish Culture in Poland after 1945: A Renewal of the Non-Renewable

Summary/Abstract: This study examines the revival of Jewish culture in Poland after the Second World War in the context of the Holocaust, Communism, emigration and the pre-war cultural traditions of Polish Jews. Although the majority of Polish Jews were killed during the Holocaust, several survivors strove to restore Jewish culture in post-war Poland. These efforts were partly and temporarily successful. During the second half of the 1940s, Polish Jews enjoyed cultural autonomy and they controlled their own cultural institutions. Nevertheless, in the early 1950s, this autonomy was abolished, many Jewish institutions were closed, and the majority of Polish Jewish artists, writers and poets emigrated.
