Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the problem of periodization in literary history with the tools of Cultural Studies. The exemplary period is the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The question is whether this period can be described as a period of absinthe, or as a period of tuberculosis, vers libre, spiritualism, or the so-called scientific novels.
