Casanova among the Sarmatians

Summary/Abstract: Casanova’s connections with Poland has been researched so far with the focus on the following issues: 1) bibliography of Polish Casanoviana (Jan Reychman), 2) Casanova’s duel with Branicki and its repercussions in Polish press (Roman Kaleta) and 3) Polonica in Czech casanovian archive (Václav Černý). The present article focuses on Casanova’s Istoria delle turbolenze della Polonia (1774–1775) reprinted with supplements twice in 1974 in Padua and Naples. The author of the article deals with the following problems included in the work: 1) Casanova’s conviction about the necessity of enlightened despotism in Poland, 2) the idea of religious tolerance against the background of the nobles confederations in the years 1767–1772, 3) Casanova’s approach to sarmatism, 4) the portraits of Sarmatian types.
