Summary/Abstract: The author of Performativity of disgust starts with a question of cultural diversity in how disgust is felt, and its relation to food, between bodies, objects and others, and ends up with a final issue of how disgust works. In the first section, she reflects on how disgust is fascinated with the texture and qualities of what is felt to be disgusting, as well as on how disgust affects the surface of the bodies of the disgusted. Then she examines the relation between disgust and stickiness, and how “stickiness” becomes an affective quality of objects. Finally, she looks at how disgust involves not just corporeal intensities, but speech acts in the example of the responses to the terrorist attacks on September 11 2001, which declare: “That’s disgusting!”.
