Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present the multidimensional understanding of the concept of discipline and its consequences for contemporary educational practice. In the article, the understanding of the discipline was divided into two basic types. On the one hand discipline is understood negatively as an external compulsion; on the other hand positively as a socially desirable trait connected with internal organisation and self-discipline. However, it seems that those two understandings do not stand in conflict with each other and no matter how discipline is understood, it is useful in child education, depending on their age, personality traits and situation.
