Summary/Abstract: This work represents an overview of American travel narratives about Yugoslavia from 1945-1955. Additionally, this thesis argues that travel narratives should be considered an important primary source for diplomatic history. This research shows that images created in these narratives sometimes influenced the United States’ policy toward Yugoslavia by playing an important role in affecting both American public opinion and policymakers. Moreover, written accounts provide a valuable vantage point for one who would like to observe how domestic social and political themes and anxieties influenced the understanding of Yugoslavia.
